My name is Lucy Skelton, I’m 19 years old and the scariest moment of my life was realising that my future depended on rapid climate action. As I finally understood what scientists have been telling us for decades, I was devastated for the lives that would be lost and changed. I was terrified by the picture painted of a future without action and I felt our opportunity to fix things slipping through my fingers. And I know I’m not the only one. 

 

We have watched our communities burn, suffered through scorching summers, pushed through countless seasons of drought, and rebuilt from floods. We’ve feared for our wellbeing and future generations, we’ve grieved the loss of our native animals, and felt the frustration as these events and more, continue to increase in frequency, intensity, and duration with no end in sight. 

 

Through my years of advocacy I have learnt that our future remains at risk due to failures in policy and politics, not science or technology. Australia can play an important role to prevent the devastating impacts of climate change, for our communities, our nation, our pacific neighbours, and the entire globe. Leading the way to net-zero now will mean lives saved, more jobs, a stronger economy, and communities better placed to thrive in the long-term. 

 

According to the findings of the Climate Target Panel and the Climate Council's "Aim High, Go Fast" report, Australia needs to be net-zero by 2035 to keep warming to 1.5 degrees. The Coalition Government's current commitment of a 26-28 percent emission reduction on 2005 levels, and their non-decision to establish a net-zero emissions target, is not enough. 

 

Scott Morrison, the Australian Government, we are calling on you to show the strong leadership we all need, and commit now to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035.

2. Commit to a 75% reduction in emissions by 2030 as supported by the Climate Council.
